A Tangled Web

Throughout this blog, you will see that the development of literacy correlates and overlaps with the development of a jesuit identity. The two, while seemingly obscure, have a symbiotic relationship. A jesuit identity cannot form without literacy; a jesuit identity cannot be understood without the tools literacy enables a person.

Unfortunately, this symbiotic relationship creates a tangled web and in order to fully understand the development of literacy, it needs to be untangled and understood for its parts. Below is a picture of my web. A picture of the many overlapping layers of literacy and jesuit values that have developed throughout my life:

Overall Connection .jpg

At first glance, this webs seems messy and confusing. Where does it start and where does it end? How are all of these bubbles connected?

As you move through this blog you will see four distinct categories emerge:

Within these categories, you will see how my literacy not only played a role but benefited from the development of my jesuit identity. Furthermore you will discover the ways in which these values overlapped with each other in order to create the jesuit educated.

As an English major at at liberal arts university, I chose to examine the way in which conventional literacies, such as reading and writing, develop alongside unconventional literacies, like a jesuit identity for my Senior Honors Project. The most influential moments in my Fairfield education stemmed from my service learning experiences, and as a student in the Educational Studies program these service learning experiences always had a sponsorship of literacy component. In one way or another I found myself sponsoring literacy just as those I worked with sponsored a literacy in me.

The goal of this project was to reflect on my education as it pertains to my development as a literate and morally responsible citizen of the community – the ultimate goal of a jesuit education.
